In an amazing about-turn the NAB authorities backed-off from an expected showdown with opposition political parties. This change of heart occurred at the nick of time amidst palpable presence of tension as NAB offices in Lahore area were declared a red zone and ring-fenced. Rangers and police will be deployed around the offices to avoid any unpleasant incident.
The PM came out of his COVID-19 lockdown to hold a meeting in which he issued warning of dire circumstances for those who would defy the writ of the state. NAB also approached the Lahore High Court to restrain Maryam Nawaz from coming to its offices along with crowd of her supporters and requested the court to direct her to bring just two persons who may act as her support staff, out of which one may be an accountant to assist her.
The accountability watchdog, however failed to satisfy the court over how a court could intervene in a purely political activity and pass an order for restraining a political party from its political activity and the petition was turned down. All of a sudden NAB postponed the Maryam Nawaz’s hearing citing NCOC guidelines against coronavirus and in wider public interest. TW
