A government medical functionary was suspended for allegedly violating the standard operating procedures to facilitate the vaccination against COVID-19. The COVID-19 vaccination campaign was launched in Karachi and the guidelines were that in the first phase of the drive was supposed to be strictly limited to frontline healthcare workers followed by people aged 65 years and above.
Sindh had received 83,000 doses of the vaccine, all of which would be provided to frontline health workers. However, it transpired that the daughter and son-in-law of Muhammad Zubair, the former governor of Sindh, were inoculated out of turn even though they were neither health workers nor elderly. It is curious that Muhammad Zubair’s younger brother, Asad Umar who is heading the National Command and Control System tacitly acknowledged the unlawful breach.
It is quite sure that the incident will be soon forgotten but the ugly truth it has revealed is that the privileged in Pakistan have dug their heels and they are as callous as ever and unrepentant as ever with no chances of changing themselves. TW
